COMMUNICATION FOR DEVELOPMENT

This training is tailored for women journalists, activists, students, and recent graduates with a strong interest in women’s rights, human rights, and social justice, aiming to support their professional integration into the media and communication sector through practical and strategic skills in communication for development.

OBJECTIVES​

To equip young women with the communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills required to design and deliver meaningful content and initiatives in the field of media and communication. The training also supports their personal empowerment and professional integration in NGOs, civil society, and media organisations

What you will learn

  • The role of communication in development and advocacy

  • Designing communication strategies for social impact

  • Writing and structuring a professional CV and motivation letter

  • Building and presenting a personal portfolio

  • Participating in and leading group discussions and speaking circles

  • Storytelling and content creation for non-profit organisations

  • Identifying communication channels and adapting messages

  • Self-confidence, public speaking, and leadership

  • Engaging with communities and amplifying marginalised voices.

Requirements

​

  • Be a young woman

  • Be a freelance journalist, a Master’s student, or a recent graduate in journalism, communication, media, social sciences, or development

  • Have an interest in gender equality, civic engagement, and social change

  • Have strong writing skills in Arabic and/or Kurdish and a good command of English

  • Be available full-time for the entire programme

  • Be open to collaborative work and personal development.

Format

  • 2 months of training

  • Hybrid training online & onsite

  • Free access to AHJ’s vodcast equipment and facilities

  • Each participant will produce one vodcast, published on AHJ platform

  • Training free of charge

  • Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered.

SUPPORT AND BENEFITS

 

The training will offer you practical experience in communication for development, personalised mentorship from experienced women journalists and communicators, and increased visibility through your participation in VFSF programmes.

This training will support your professional integration in the communication and development sectors — whether working with NGOs or civil society organisations, designing advocacy campaigns, managing communication for humanitarian programmes, or producing meaningful content that serves social transformation.

You will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the training.

​

You will also be integrated into the Voix des Femmes Sans Frontieres VFSF - Women Voices Without Borders  network, connecting over 350 women journalists, activists, and experts across 11 MENA countries.

PRESENTATION OF THE TRAINER

 

Shayda Hessami is a French-Kurdish journalist and trainer, and the founder of Aide Humanitaire et Journalisme. She has over 15 years of experience in media development, humanitarian action, and gender advocacy across the MENA region. She has worked extensively designing and leading training programmes focused on communication for development, digital storytelling, and women’s empowerment.

As the initiator of the Voix des Femmes Sans Frontières VFSF initiative, Shayda combines field expertise with a strong commitment to inclusive education and professional integration. Her trainings empower young women to develop their voice, skills, and confidence as communicators and change-makers.

 

Trainer assistants will be selected from AHJ’s existing network of experienced professionals, based on the location of the training and the language of instruction. Our pool includes women experts in journalism, audio production, communication, and advocacy from across the MENA region and beyond, ensuring context-relevant and high-quality training for each cohort.
